Similarities Between Twilight & Disney(pics)

THR: Vampires Bring $7 Bil To Hollywood Economy

Photobucket

Hollywood has repeatedly peddled the apocalyptic threat from aliens, machines, comets, viruses and zombies, but who was watching the vampires?

Never exactly absent from the entertainment scene, those eternal bloodsuckers lately have infiltrated everything from big screens and little screens to bookstore shelves, clothing racks, download services, video games and video, record and jewelry stores.

Just this week, the Fox/New Regency "Twilight" parody "Vampires Suck" grossed $20 million, and 5 million regular viewers are rabidly following HBO's newest hit, "True Blood," as it swoops toward its season 3 finale Sept. 12. Meanwhile, Justin Cronin's "The Passage," Stephenie Meyer's "Breaking Dawn" and Charlaine Harris' "Dead and Gone" hover on best-seller lists.

These charming, deadly immortals are everywhere. And as a result, they're spilling as much green as red -- about $7 billion since the "Twilight" film franchise bowed less than two years ago, according to THR estimates.

What started with some ancient, hysterical myths and a pair of spooky 19th century tales -- John Polidori's "The Vampyre" (1819) and Bram Stoker's "Dracula" (1897) -- has bloomed into an entire inexhaustible industry. (Find out which vampire movies we'd like to see remade -- and who should star -- at the end of this article.)

"By starting with one simple mythological creature that's been part of our literary universe for centuries, you can create a story that has it all: romance, horror, action, special effects, sex, epic love, wish fulfillment, romantic leading men, delicious bad-boy villains, female badasses, damsels in distress, death, monsters and, ultimately, the perfectly flawed hero who would give it all up if it meant they wouldn't have to spend eternity alone," says Julie Plec, writer and exec producer of the CW series "The Vampire Diaries." It doesn't get more universal than that."

That gets to the bloody heart of it. Because they're not specific to genre, vampires have the freedom to roam not just across mediums but from romance to horror to political commentary to humor. Their versatility is endless, swinging from chaste innocence to sexy violence, so the potential audience is everyone.

No other subject has sunk its teeth into pop culture quite so pervasively.

Let's start with the current king. Globally, the three "Twilight" films, released in 2008, 2009 and 2010, have a $1.76 billion cume at the global boxoffice. The first two each has grossed another $160 million or so in home video sales (the third hits Blu-ray/DVD in September). That's more than $2 billion right there.

If the coming two installments of "Breaking Dawn" -- which Summit will release in November 2011 and November 2012 -- do similar business in theaters and the home-entertainment market, that would add another $1.7 billion to the coffers.

And that's just from the movie versions of Meyer's colossally successful book series.

With "Twilight" riding herd, vampire movies have accounted for an average of 3% of total boxoffice the past three years. So, for example, with "New Moon," "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" and "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant" totaling $356.7 million domestic in 2009, that amounted to 3.4% of the industry's $10.6 billion U.S. haul that year.

The other major flank of the current undead siege consists of "Vampire Diaries" and "True Blood," HBO's most successful property since "The Sopranos." Pinpointing the value of a monster television property is harder than driving a stake through the heart of a nasty beastie, but the longer a show is on the air (at least up to seven seasons), the more money it is going to throw off in ancillaries.

Few TV shows make money upfront; almost all are in deficit until the aftermarket kicks in. Both shows have lots of life left in them and huge fan bases, so sources see buckets of cash eventually pouring into the coffers of the "Diaries" producers, Warner Bros. and CBS, which also happen to co-own the CW.

"True Blood" is harder to quantify because some of its value is in brand-building and bringing more subscribers to the premium cable service. Even so, estimates from two outside sources suggest that if the shows last five years on their respective outlets, domestic and foreign licensing arrangements could generate $100 million-$125 million from "Vampire Diaries" and $50 million-$75 million from "Blood."

Robert Pattinson's Hair Stolen!

Svensk översättning i slutet

Robert Pattinson is reportedly worried his trademark locks will end up in an auction after some of his hair was stolen.

The Twilight actor, who is famous for his signature floppy brown hair which has won him an army of teenage female fans recently cut his hair for a new film role but was left 'devastated' when some of his freshly chopped hair myseriously disappeared.

A source explained: “Robert has had his hair cut short for a movie role but his discarded hair has gone missing,”

They added: “Someone collected it and Rob is concerned it will end up in some tacky auction. It's probably about the most valuable hair in showbiz!”

The 24-year old heartthrob who stars as vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight saga is thought to have had his hair cut for his latest role as a student in new film Water For Elephants.

His new style has caused a stir amongst Twihard R-Pattz fans after reports of his new hair cut hit the internet.

Pattinson was even asked about his new hair in an interview with chat show host Ellen DeGeneres where he claimed he was amazed at the attention his new style had received.

He later joked with the American Idol judge that he was forced to have his hair cut because: “I got a terrible infestation of nits and I had to shave it all off,”

Twilight

So what's the deal? Is Summit Entertainment one of the big studios now? Should we consider them such, or are they still an indie production company? The truth is slightly murky at this point, with the studio still straddling the line between the two and existing in the realm of being something of a MINI-MAJOR. For the past few years it has thoroughly outperformed the indie houses and smaller studios, while pulling in half of the total gross of the smallest major studio. But that could change any minute now.

Summit isn't a studio with an impressive list of films under its belt. While it sports a host of higher profile films, its one saving grace is a small property it picked up and continues to churn out that you know best as Twilight. Flush with cash from their license to print money, they've been investing in more lucrative, somewhat midrange ventures that they hope will pay off. Trouble is, they keep stumbling. While the Twilight films bring in big bucks at the box office, on DVD, and in merchandising, the critical reception has bottomed out, hinting that the franchise will have an extremely short shelf life as the girls who love it now will soon outgrow it. Meanwhile, the studio can't seem to find another hit. This year alone they have two stinkers in the poorly conceived Furry Vengeance and the film with one of the worst endings ever, Remember Me. Neither performed admirably, and while their third film, The Ghost Writer, received tons of critical praise, backlash against director Roman Polanski kept people away.

All told, with a third of the year down, Summit is only accounting for 1.7% of the total box office and is 10th in a 12-horse race. Of course, all that is about to change. With a summertime release of the third Twilight film, Eclipse, there's a good chance repeat business could make this a bigger hit than the last one, even though the third book is notoriously the worst, loathed even by many fans, and Twilight fever seems to be cooling. Even the rage against it seems to be waning, as those angry over glittery vampires lose interest in the joke and move on. Whether or not this breaks any of the previous box-office totals is immaterial; the film will still make a ton of money and shoot Summit once again up the chart to its safe place in the middle of the list.

But can it go over the top? Can a strong box-office take from Eclipse work in tandem with other feminine counterprogrammed films like the saccharine Letters to Juliet (which will play very well to older female audiences) and the younger, hipper Step Up 3D to ultimately break out and push Summit into the top six? Can it muscle its way past struggling studios like Universal that look to have very weak summer lineups? Can Summit finally earn its place at the table and lure some very attractive film projects, taking risks where other studios won't?

Or will they continue to have a year like they're having, and find themselves duking it out for a strong showing in the middle? Personally, I like Summit. I like what they appear to be doing. And I'd love to see another major studio rise to prominence, especially as we watch studios like Miramax, MGM, and the Weinstein Company fade away. Keep an eye on Summit this summer. They might surprise us all and prove to be the little studio that could.

For one, Eclipse is widely regarded by critics and fans as the best book in the Twilight series. Eclipse has the best (most defined) character arcs, clear human-level scope, regular well-needed humor, tense romance, and great action paced throughout the book. Twilight fans sites find that the book is the favorite of the series among approx. 2/3 of readers. Eclipse will definitely be a winner for Summit; preview fans were incredibly enthusiastic, more so than the first two films.

(An aside: Breaking Dawn, the last of the series, is the most controversial book among fans as Bella begins to realize her full potential as a vampire, and the romance is downplayed after the first act; there is an oddly adult infant character introduced which could be problematic, although if Condon simply drops much of the "oddly adult" parts, it should film well. The scope is truly epic, and should really be a great finale. But again, due to the maturing lead role, many fans, especially those in the target demo, have some real problems with the Breaking Dawn).

"Can Summit finally earn its place at the table?" is an important question. I see their real problem as two fold.

First, they need to step up, set aside the odd, indie plots they've championed thus far (other than Twilight), like Remember Me. Star Pattinson wanted to make it, but that should not have been good enough to green light it. It is difficult to tell a good story with mainstream appeal, at low cost. But it can be done... if you have the right talent.

Which is the second problem. Summit has a real anti-social take on hiring and firing. Examples?

Director Catherine Hardwicke sends Twilight into the stratosphere, providing the money to make the studio into a major... and they fire her. Now she's got Red Riding Hood, a genius film, the hottest thing for young women in development since Twilight, in pre-production at Warner Bros.

When key villain Rachelle Lefevre tries to get a boost to her salary, they fire her, publish acrimonious scheduling insults, and re-cast, causing a major continuity lapse for Eclipse, the one real problem the film has. And it was totally avoidable, if they'd been willing to bargain and adjust rather than just trumpet how "right" they were in firing this lowly actress, who still gets adoring fans swamping her every appearance. How about Bryce Dallas Howard, her replacement? Zero. Nada. No interest whatsoever. She is the girl pretending to be Rachelle/Victoria. Fail. Want proof? Just look at the character's Barbie doll -- a dead ringer for Lefevre.

The Cullen family supporting cast asks for salary upgrades to $1 mil per film, quite modest given their widespread appeal -- Been to Harold Square lately? Any youth-oriented awards shows? -- and that they are likely to be close to the billion dollar range for each of Breaking Dawn. So what does Summit do? It runs a high-profile, public screed against the Cullen actors like it's the Teamsters going on strike. They make it very clear that they intend to fire one or more of them because they are being "greedy" and ruining the entire production.

What?!? Just look at the fan boards now. They aren't arguing about Team Edward or Team Jacob, they are fighting over what is an appropriate percentage of gross for integral supporting cast members. What fun. Fans are comparing Summit to the Volturi, the arch villains of the series, drawing parallels between their motives and approaches. Which are actually quite accurate. Has Summit even read the Twilight books?

And "integral" is the key word there. In the minds of fans, the Cullen family is a big deal, and huge part of the appeal, more like Disney's "rag-tag" supporting characters in their princess films, than the brief roles in a typical drama. Not so many lines, but essential in the books and in the expectations of the fans.

Breaking Dawn Salary Disputes "Could Turn Ugly," Director Says

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke warns that Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene could be replaced -- like Rachelle Lefevre -- in the hit vampire flicks if they ask for too much money to reprise their roles in Breaking Dawn.

"Ashley and Kellan have agents, managers, lawyers... you get all of these outside influences telling you you should hold out for this much because you're such an important part of the franchise," Hardwicke told UsMagazine.com at the Twilight convention in Vancouver on Sunday.

The Hollywood Reporter says Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson have already received huge raises for their roles in Stephenie Meyer's fourth book, which is rumored to be split into two movies. But the secondary characters are still negotiating salaries.

A source tells Us that "Summit leaked the story to turn fans against the cast. They are leading the negotiations to the press and are trying to make them look greedy... Summit has made millions and the cast is just looking to get what they deserve."

Said Hardwicke, "Possibly, RachelleAshley and Kellan might not even be all that involved. They have all the other people telling them things and a lot of stuff can get mishandled, like what happened with Rachelle. There's so many possible misunderstandings. It breaks my heart."

"It could turn ugly. Do [these actors] deserve more money? Probably they do, on one level. But if everybody make so much money then... it's complicated. What a mess!" she continued.

The source tells Us, "The leads made 20 times as much on Eclipse than they did on Twilight," continues the source. "The non-leads are not asking for anything close to that."

Meanwhile, Pattinson and Stewart tell USA Today why they haven't been photographed together recently. (Us Weekly reported last month that they have a system for sneaking around to see each other. While filming Eclipse, out June 30, they spent most of their nights together, but, says a source, "always had two separate drivers to give the illusion they weren't an item.")

Nikki Reed Talks About Rob and Eclipse

SNMag: What do you think about the Rob Pattinson craze?
NR: I get it. Rob is a totally fascinating, amazing, wonderful guy. I get why all these girls are so in love with him. He’s super intelligent, mysterious, musical and intellectual. I get it.

SNMag: How do you guys spend your free time when you’re shooting?
NR: We get creative and make silly mini movies and do awesome stuff like that. Other times we just lay around and watch television. There are a lot of music nights because Xavier [Samuel], Rob and Jackson [Rathbone] are very musical. We eat a lot of Thai food. There’s a Thai food place close by. We hang out with each other because we’re very isolated.

Stephenie Meyer doing 'The Twilight Saga: Eclipse' press with 'Twilight' fansites

StephenieMeyer.comStephenie Meyer has updated her website blog to talk about her plans for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse promotions, and she has let us know that while she may have done the press junket circuit for Twilight and Oprah for New Moon, she's got bigger (and arguably better) plans for Eclipse.

Hey guys,

I want to do something different with publicity for this movie release. For Twilight, I did the normal press junket, for New Moon I got to go on Oprah. Both of these were fun, exciting experiences. However, they both had the same drawback—the interviews were designed for a very broad audience, and because of that, most of the questions were about things you guys have known the answers to for years. I feel like all of the basic questions have been answered, and for Eclipse I want to focus on the more specific questions of the readers. To accomplish that, I'm hosting my own mini-junket with a few fansites. It will be held on Friday, June 18th, the week before the L.A. premiere.

Twilight Cast Squabbling over Money

Will the family that slays together, stay together?

The Cullen family could be seeing some new faces in familiar roles unless some of the Twilight actors, notably Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene, are able to successfully renegotiate new contracts for the smash-hit film franchise's final installments.

While reports are flying that the actors' contract demands are holding up production of Breaking Dawn, which will be split into a two movies, insiders tell PEOPLE that isn't true.

"There was never a deal in place for the fourth movie," the source adds. "They had a three-picture deal which has expired, and it's standard industry practice to renegotiate, and it's standard industry practice to negotiate on the fourth movie."

Cullen kids Lutz and Greene have reportedly been trying to score pay days of about $1.5 million, which is still well below what stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are bringing in. And reports have circulated that the studio could simply replace them if negotiations go sour.

"It's the first opportunity the actors have had to renegotiate at all. Their original contracts were through the first three films," says the source. "Those first three [movies] obviously did amazingly and the kids didn't share in the profits they didn't get any bonuses."
