Kristen Stewart Voted As MTV News' #7 Woman Of 2009

At 19 years old, Kristen Stewart already has an amazing 23 films under her belt. Yet, she entered 2009 with a lot of questions: Was "Twilight" a fluke? How would the notoriously press-shy starlet handle A-list fame? And would "New Moon" "kill" her, as she promised?
2009 Highlights: It all began in the snowy mountains of Park City, Utah, where a bundled-up KStew arrived at the Sundance Film Festival to discover that paparazzi were everywhere — quite a difference from early 2008, when she walked down the streets unbothered. The "Twilight" star was there to unveil "Adventureland," a sweet coming-of-age drama that was well-received by critics and became a minor hit nationwide in April. Of course, 2010 will start out similarly for Kristen, as she'll be at Sundance next month with two films.

While the second installment of the "Twilight Saga" continues to ride high at the box office, we'd be remiss if we didn't check in with Taylor Lautner to see what's on his mind these days. With help from our friends at MTV Radio, read on for an interview with the breakout star that's nearly as revealing as all those shirtless-wolf-pack scenes.
MTV: What did you see as your biggest challenge heading into the "New Moon" shoot?
Taylor Lautner: Basically, my job was to continue what I started in "Twilight," which was [depicting] this extremely happy, friendly, outgoing guy who is best friends with Bella. I had to continue that for the first half of the film, but as soon as I transform, I snap and become a completely different person. I'm dealing with my issues, and it's really hard for me.
MTV: So it wasn't just the physical requirements, in your mind.
Lautner: Jacob transforms a lot in "New Moon," not only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. So it was a matter of getting to the gym and eating the right foods and a lot of it, but also reading and studying the book and my character over and over and over again so I could have this character down — because he changes in many, many different ways.
MTV: When you were working out and bulking up, how did you block out all the pressure?
Lautner: I knew where my character went in "New Moon," and that's all I tried to stay focused on. I couldn't control things outside, I couldn't control the media, but I could control what I was doing to portray Jacob Black correctly. So that's what I stayed focused on the whole entire time.
MTV: There are a lot of shirtless moments in "New Moon," and some critics have called them gratuitous. As an actor, do you find it hard to not also laugh at some of those scenes?
Lautner: [When Jacob] wipes her blood? Seriously, I start laughing so hard every time I see [that scene]. "Oh, you're bleeding? Let me fix it." It's so embarrassing. Here's the thing: There's a reason he's not wearing clothes all the time. When he transforms, all his clothes get shredded; he can't help it. And when he goes into the woods to get something to put on, so he's not naked, it's just a ripped pair of jean shorts. And he's also hot — [his temperature is] 108 degrees, so that's another reason.
MTV: Now that you've got all these muscles, will you only accept those kinds of roles from here on out?
Lautner: Look, I love this character, I love this story. Putting on the weight and not wearing much clothing was required by the role. A year from now, if I love a character that requires me to lose 40 pounds, I'm ready to do it.
MTV: What do you see as the key difference between fans who call themselves Team Edward and those who are Team Jacob?
Lautner: Well, Edward and Jacob are complete opposite guys. They are hot and cold. [He laughs.] Literally. I personally love Jacob and Bella's relationship, how they began as best friends and it starts to grow into something more and more. Both guys are in love with Bella. Both guys are always going to be there for Bella, and they're protective. Ultimately, I think it's about what kind of guy you like.

"We all root for each other," she tells MTV.

Ever since the first "Twilight" film was released — kicking off the phenomenon that has included record-breaking box-office numbers, fainting fans, megawatt premieres, etc. — the suddenly superstar cast has been catapulted into a spotlight none of them saw coming. As such, the actors are very much in demand and currently working on a number of projects.
When Nikki Reed stopped by MTV News recently to discuss her film "Last Day of Summer," we asked her which of her co-stars' upcoming films she's most excited to see.
"All of them," she said. "I love Taylor [Lautner] so much, and I'm so proud of him and what he's doing. He's making a great movie in Pittsburgh right now," she said, referring to the John Singleton-directed action thriller "Abduction."
"I'm excited about Rob [Pattinson]'s movie 'Water for Elephants,' " she added. "I think he's going to be phenomenal in that, and Kristen [Stewart] is doing an amazing film ['On the Road']. Elizabeth Reaser just did a movie called 'Homework' with Michael Angarano, who's a really good friend of mine, and Emma Roberts that I'm excited about."
Reed and her co-stars have so many projects going that she was hard-pressed to remember everyone's work schedule. "We all root for each other," she said.
Speaking of which, the multi-talented and multi-tasking actress, who recently directed Sage's music video for "Edie Sedgwick," lit up at our question about whether she would consider directing a music video for her co-star Jackson Rathbone's band, 100 Monkeys.
"Would I ever! Jackson and I are on the phone every other day, because we're trying to find a movie to do together. I forgot to mention him — his band is skyrocketing. It's amazing," she gushed. "I would be honored. I don't want to take the position: 'Would I ever.' If he would ever let me, yeah. I love them."

Elizabeth Reaser might play Edward's adopted vampire mom, Esme Cullen, in "Twilight," but that doesn't mean she can't find the "Eclipse" tent scene to be one really sexy moment. If Twi-Hards thought it was hot in the book, Reaser said, then they really need to see the flick, out June 30.
"The tent scene, I remember that being one of the hottest scenes in the books, so I'm excited to see that," Reaser said when she stopped by the MTV News offices Tuesday (May 18). "I'm Team Edward, so I can't relate to [Bella] being torn [between Edward and Jacob], but I mean, come on, vampires are cool! Wolves are super hairy and they smell disgusting, like dogs."
Reaser said the tent scene ups the sexual ante in the "Twilight Saga." "The tent scene is sort of a three-way — I mean, it's a chaste three-way, but it is, nonetheless, a three-way," she said. "So I do think that ups the sexiness factor in this movie, but I don't know. The first movie, I thought, was intensely sexy, because they couldn't touch, and to watch them fall in love was so sexy. And I love that, in the books, they all have great chemistry. So it's fun to watch."
Regardless of how chaste the tent scene is, Reaser understands that Twilighters are anticipating it. "I have no realistic idea of what excites people. I'm always surprised," she said of what fans are looking forward to. "If I were a fan? I'm starting to sound like a sicko, but I would say the tent scene. I mentioned it like five times now. It's getting weird. That's my son! I'm happy we're not really related, so it's not that weird.
"I'm excited to see the action, like running through the forest," she added. "I was running on the back of the truck at 30 miles per hour, so I'm excited to see that."

It's not exactly breaking news when the folks behind the wildly successful "Twilight" soundtracks tap indie acts to appear on their albums — at least not after last year's "New Moon" 'track featured contributions from the likes of Bon Iver, Lykke Li and Grizzly Bear.
But on Wednesday, as MySpace Music unveiled the list of bands that would appear on the upcoming "Eclipse" album, a few names stood out from the fold; chief among them was Metric.
Over the years, the Canadian quartet — led by frontwoman Emily Haines — have forged a reputation for being fiercely independent, making their own path and, as much as possible, shying away from the limelight, to the point that, to be honest, appearing on a major motion-picture soundtrack didn't seem to be anywhere on their list of priorities.
Haines didn't debate that point when she sat down with MTV News to discuss her band's involvement with "Eclipse." The idea seemed impossible to her until, she said, a famed composer gave her a call.
"I have to say it was unlike any experience I've ever had. ... I got a phone call from Howard Shore, who is, in my opinion, the best, heavyweight film composer out there. He did the scores for the 'Lord of the Rings' and, more importantly to me, he did all the David Cronenberg films: 'The Fly,' 'Naked Lunch.' He's an amazing, brilliant musician," Haines said. "[He] calls me and says, 'I want to write with you ... I want you to write with me, for the song at the end of the movie, the penultimate moment, where the whole score culminates in this incredible scene.' And I was like, 'OK.' "
From there, Haines — working off a copy of the "Eclipse" script — got to work writing a song based on the experiences of Bella Swan. And much like her involvement in the project, writing a song through someone else's eyes was something she never dreamed she'd be doing.
"I had to ... really try to embody the voice of Bella, which I've never done. I've always been interested in that — writing for film — and it was really cool to feel the emotions of someone else, and then try to express it in a way that's consistent with Stephenie [Meyer]'s books," she said. "It was so interesting for me. And [Shore] had also written the [chord] progressions, and we had to work within his melodic ideas, but still make it us. ... He really wanted it to be Metric. So it's, like, Metric and Howard Shore, writing this moment. And when you see the movie, you'll hear that the melodies from the song we wrote are part of the score. ... I can't believe my luck, and it was really cool to work with him."
While writing Metric's contribution to the "Eclipse" soundtrack — a song titled, appropriately enough, "Eclipse (All Yours)" — Haines connected not just with the character of Bella, but the actress who plays her, Kristen Stewart. In doing so, she discovered a newfound depth and respect for both the actress and the series' author.
"Well, it was definitely unusual. ... With this, it was really feeling this character, and I really like Kristen Stewart. I think she's got such a great energy around her, and the character is such a good representation of a real girl," Haines said. "I think a lot of times young women get characterized as shallow or silly, and we all have to deal with, in popular culture, these terrifying Barbies. And I think Kristen Stewart as an actress, and the character that Stephenie created in these books is a really interesting, real character."
So while hearing all about the song's creation is nice, we're sure the "Twilight" fans of the world are really dying to know whether Haines got to see "Eclipse" (hitting theaters June 30). Well, if she did, she's not saying. And it's probably for the best.
"I feel like if I comment on that, it's kind of the equivalent of when you say something about Scientology: Someone's going to come and get me," she laughed. "I'm not revealing anything, to anyone, about anything, ever."
