The 50 Best Movies of 2009: Adventureland & Up in the Air on the list

Moviefones' 50 Best Movies of 2009 , Adevntureland and Up in the Air is on the list.

31. 'Adventureland'

Coming of age dramedies are a dime a dozen these days, so it's always a treat to find one that manages to be fresh, funny -- and not entirely clichéd. 'Superbad' director Greg Mottola scores again with this nostalgic trip to the titular park in the summer of '87 starring a lovable Jesse Eisenberg and an uncharacteristically charismatic Kristen Stewart. Plus, the film confirms what most of us have long suspected: Amusement park games are all rigged!

1. 'Up in the Air'

With three feature films now under his belt – 'Thank You for Smoking,' 'Juno' and now this instant classic -- is there any doubt that 32-year-old Jason Reitman is one of Hollywood's best directors? George Clooney somehow makes a corporate downsizer (topical!) lovable and magnetic in a superb lead turn (his best yet), while Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga kill as the distinctly powerful women who change his life. 'Air' is a near-perfect film that is at times bitingly funny, at other times heartrendingly sad -- sort of like life, come to think of it. -- KP

NylonMag The Insider: Jesse Eisenberg talks Aventurland

The “indie” label might not apply to Jesse Eisenberg anymore. After years staying under-the-radar with roles in critically acclaimed (but barely seen) flicks like Rodger Dodger and The Squid and the Whale, the actor finally got a taste of the big-time with last year’s release of Adventureland and Zombieland. Now, he’s got three films—The Living Wake, Holy Rollers, and Solitary Man—coming out this month, with The Social Network (aka The Facebook Movie) set for release in October. NYLON recently made Eisenberg wake up early to talk about it all.

You were in two of my favorite films of 2009—Adventureland and Zombieland. Are you just really picky? I got lucky to get into those movies, because I think a lot of people thought they were really, really good. It’s not some special foresight I have. I had no idea how Zombieland would turned out, and I was concerned at some points during filming. The script was really funny and great, and the director had done great stuff, but it was hard to tell how it would come together. Whereas with Adventureland, it felt a bit clearer what it would become while we were filming. I’ve worked on some bad things, and there’s nothing worse than being on a set all day for something that you don’t believe in.

You filmed The Living Wake back in 2005. Is it weird to be promoting something that you worked on so long ago? It was such a special movie. The long wait was a little frustrating, because you feel like you have something that’s so great. I think it’s still a big part of me; it’s the kind of thing that I think is the greatest thing anybody ever does in their life, it’s so well-written and well-executed. It was really the whole package. I’ve never had an experience like on this movie, and I’ve done a lot of movies.

You sing and play guitar in The Living Wake—any band aspirations? I play mostly piano. I wrote a musical called “Me Time” over the course of the last years, and it’s finally in the early stages of production. It’s [a satire] about self-indulgence. I also wrote two plays, one of which is getting put on next year, and one is being turned into a movie. I love theater, movies have such a commerciality of the product, and with theater you just don’t see it in the say way.

Is there any truth to the Zombieland 2 rumor? That doesn’t really exist. I think they do that with every movie that makes a profit.

If it does happen, would you sign on? Yeah, I guess so—if it was good. I’d look at it like a new project, we’d all evaluate it like it was the first time we were reading it.

When you spoke with NYLON Guys last year, you talked about people on the street thinking you were Jonathan Groff, “the guy from the musical Spring Awakening.” Are you finally getting recognized as Jesse Eisenberg? Not at all. I went to the benefit for the Atlantic Theater, where we both work, and two people from there came up to me and said his name. He’s nice, he’s a great actor…. I think I’m going to work with him very soon. Any time somebody recognizes you on the street, it’s uncomfortable for several reasons: they’re strangers; it makes you feel like an idiot; it makes you question the whole profession. It’s a totally unnatural thing, and in no other part of society would that happen.

The Sexiest Women of Summer Movies 2010: Kristen Stewart & Nikki Reed

Kristen Stewart - 'Twilight: Eclipse'

She Plays: Bella Swan, the teenage girl lucky enough to win the affections of sexy vampire Edward Cullen.

Where Else You've Seen Her: As Joan Jett in 'The Runaways' and in the other 'Twilight' saga movies.

Why She's Hot: Kristen doesn't fit the textbook "hot Hollywood actress" template, and that's what makes her so attractive -- and it's probably the reason Edward and Jacob continually fight over her in 'Eclipse.' She's subtle, not overly flashy or flirty, and has a dark, slightly sourpuss edge to her. Plus, if you saw 'Adventureland,' you no doubt have a crush on her like we do.

Nikki Reed - 'Chain Letter'

She Plays: Jessie, a teen who becomes the target of a maniac killer after not forwarding a text and email chain letter; she also reprises her role as Rosalie in 'Eclipse.'

Where Else You've Seen Her: In the rest of the 'Twilight' movies, as well as 'The O.C.,' where she played Sadie.

Why She's Hot: Every horror movie needs a hot chick, but Nikki Reed, though foxy, is more than that. She wrote her debut film 'Thirteen' when she was just a young teen, showcasing her bad-girl, troubled past. Hot. Now, Reed plays a classier character: Rosalie Hale, the snobby beautiful vampire in the 'Twilight' saga; and she gets to play sexy again in the scary 'Chain Letter.' Reed's dark skin, long unruly hair and endless legs make her a definite standout for the summer.

The Top Ten Movie Soundtracks of 2009; Adventureland & New Moon on list

Many of the films' soundtracks this year were highly anticipated, with indie rock star power attached early on to films like The Twilight Saga: New Moon (Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver) and Where the Wild Things Are (Karen O. of Yeah Yeah Yeahs), but not all delivered on that promise when the visuals were married in the final product.

The commonality of most of the soundtracks on this list is nostalgia, whether it be for old cinema classics or for our own childhood. It's a tricky business, tickling that ache for the past, but for the films below business is mostly good. (As an added bonus, several of the entries below have "reassembled" playlists incorporating all the songs used in the film -- enjoy!)

New Moon makes this list almost purely because of the inclusion of new material from the likes of Grizzly Bear ("Slow Life"), Thom Yorke ("Hearing Damage"), and pairing Bon Iver with St. Vincent ("Roslyn"). Whether it's the best music for Taylor Lautner to remove his shirt to is probably up for debate.

2. Adventureland (Rssmbld Sndtrck Playlist)
Maybe I just have a soft spot for movies that look back fondly at the year 1987, but the music used and the general feeling in this coming-of-age movie transcends simple nostalgia. Sandwiched between songs from The Replacements is The Velvet Underground ("Pale Blue Eyes" serves as a sort of theme for Kristen Stewart's Emily) and everything from Animotion to Judas Priest. And, of course, several playings of Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus," dampened only by the sweet, sweet dancing of Lisa P. (Margarita Levieva).
